This copper plate was acquired whilst I was on excavation in Egypt with Macquarie University and before you ask no, this was not one of the artefacts from site! I was in a jewellery store with my fellow budding archaeologist friends, rummaging through a chest of Bedouin jewellery when I saw this hanging on the wall. I don’t even think it was for sale but when I enquired the owner said I could have it for 70 EP. He also told me that the engravings are verses from the Qur’an and because of this I should not place it on the floor. To me it’s worth more than $14. Its religious sentiment, discoloured appearance and the way I acquired it makes this find one in a million. My bookcase is its’ home now and it holds the other treasures I found whilst living in Egypt. I get nostalgic for the country I called home for two months whenever I see the plate. Melissa
